Reminiscing of Wisconsin
I live in Denver, so clearly I am from somewhere else. It seems no one who lives here grew up here. Colorado Natives may complain, but they likely enjoy the variety us migratory individuals bring to this beautiful city.
I am from Wisconsin. Wisconsin is known for beer, but in a different way Denver is. When many people think of Wisconsin they think of Miller, Milwaukee’s Best, maybe...
Denver: BeerCity USA
I have been busy and neglecting my blog lately. As I don’t forsee being able to write anything new and creative in the next few days, here’s an article I posted on examiner.com.
Enjoy:
There is no doubt that people in Denver love beer. I could spend 1,000 words or less arguing the superlatives of Denver and putting down “lesser” beer markets. With passion and persuasion I could turn...

Computers are still hard...but I'm trying
I am still not a huge fan of technology, but I am attempting to make it work. I am actually experimenting with some new technology and really enjoying what I can do. Not too long ago, my phone broke. Water damage, it was sad. So I thought it was time to get a new phone. Now previously, I had a phone that could perform functions such as making phone calls and sending text messages. Yup,...
Brewer for a day
On Tuesday I got the chance to help make a batch of beer. They didn’t really need me and I’m sure I was more in the way than anything, but I wanted to learn and experience what it looked like to make beer on a large scale. So I tagged along, asked a lot of questions, and helped…a little.
Here’s a rough drawing of how beer is made. Actually, this is how wort is made. It is...

Adventures in Baking
Part of being Dutch is being thrifty. People can call us cheap, but I think thrifty sounds more flattering and really, it just comes down to being resourceful. We don’t throw things away. Part of my family tradition is eating leftovers and not throwing anything in the fridge away. That paired with a respect for good beer makes pouring beer down the drain a tragic experience for me.
I had a...
Computers are hard
I might have made some suggestions that my website will be going live soon. Now, soon is a relative term. Soon might be tomorrow, or soon might be next week. Soon might even be next month.
Ultimately, computers are hard. I don’t like them. Making a website is quite difficult and I don’t really know what to do about it.
In the meantime, take a look at the articles I have on the...
New Things
Yesterday I started a new job. I now officially work at a brewery. I’m not going to say which one, because I have been advised to avoid stalkers. But I will tell you that the brewery is relatively new and freaking awesome. If you’re actually my friend, you can ask me, I’ll tell you, and you can come visit me. If you’re not my friend and want to stalk me…well you’ll probably find a way to figure...
Why I like Beer
People have asked me why I like beer so much. Well, that’s a complicated question and the answer has gone through a few phases over the years. This is how it all started:
I liked beer because boys liked beer.
College house parties in Wisconsin were synonymous with cute boys and kegs of Milwaukee’s Best. If anyone knows anything about “Beast” they know that it is not, in fact, Milwaukee’s best. But...

Brewery on Colfax, post 2: Colfax?
Location, location, location. James and Tina have had a brewery on their mind for 10 years and in a decade of planning and searching for the perfect location they choose a spot that suited their liking.
Colfax.
And not even that one block of Colfax that’s kind of cute, they chose a building that previously housed a sketchy mattress store. So if you’re wondering what happened to your favorite place...
Brewery on Colfax, post 1: What's this?
Tina and James, owners of the Royal Hilltop and three locations of the Cheeky Monk (Denver, Westminster, and Winter Park) are starting a new adventure. Their four existing restaurants all revolve around beer imported from Great Britain or Belgium as well as some of the finer American Craft. As a server at the Colfax location I get asked all sorts of great questions about our beer like,
“Can I get...
Women Like Beer
I am a woman and I like beer. I like it very much.
I like beer so much I want to make it my job to like beer and talk about it. I’ve casually mentioned this to people before and I get interesting reactions. On two separate occasions, I have mentioned it and men have replied to me, “You’re a good-looking girl, I bet you could make it in the beer industry.”
My first...
Professional Photography: making normal people...
As I put together a blog, website, and online newspaper column I realized that I should have pictures of myself posted. Naturally, I first go to my facebook and try to decide in what picture I look the best. Unfortunately many of my pictures look somewhat like this:
That picture is me freaking out because the Red Panda at the zoo is so unbelievably cute. Seriously though, look at it.
It came...
Technology?
Computers are not my favorite. I think I’m going to blame it on my parents. My dad used a typewriter until a few years ago. The only reason he discontinued his typewriter usage was due to a decreased supply of typewriter ink ribbons. Now I’m “Generation Y” kid, so I’ve been exposed to plenty of new technology over the years, but I’ve always avoided jumping into...
Welcome!
A Belgian Blond tends to be clear, crisp, and dry, with low-to-medium bitterness and aroma from hops, and some sweetness from the pilsner malt. In Belgium, blonds can also be classified in the style called a single.
I am a 24 year old woman with fair hair and Dutch or Belgian ancestry. I am also a Belgian Blond. I may be classified as a single as well, though I don’t see why that really matter...
